A somewhat original comic trifle, dealing with the endeavours of an imitation Max Linder to win fame by the methods of the great original. Needless to say, he is a very inferior imitation and, his spuriousness having been discovered, he suffers badly at the hands of those he has attempted to deceive. (The Bioscope, 15.10.1914)

 

 

 

Anmerkung: Die Aufführung in Frankreich war für den 14.8.1914 vorgesehen. Der Ausbruch des Weltkriegs am 3.8.1914 hat dies verhindert. Laut Henri Bousquets «Catalogue Pathé des années 1896 à 1914» (Vol. 3) beschränkt sich die Mitwirkung Linders in diesem Film auf die Vorführung eines Ausschnitts von «Max pédicure» [1914]. Trotzdem er in diesem Film also nicht mitgespielt hat, wurde er aber aufgrund seines Titels bereits ab 1921 als Bestandteil der Linder-Filmografie geführt (siehe: Ciné-Journal, 27.8.1921) ― [Note: The release in France was scheduled for Aug. 14th 1914. The outbreak of World War I on Aug. 3rd 1914 prohibited that. According to Henri Bousquet's «Catalogue Pathé des années 1896 à 1914» (Vol. 3) Linder's participation was limited to a screening of an excerpt of «Max pédicure» [1914]. Pathé Register:

 

Der französische Filmhistoriker Henri Bousquet übernahm in den neunziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts die Aufgabe das Gesamtwerk der französischen Filmproduktionsfirma Pathé Frères zu katalogisieren. Basis für seine Arbeit waren zwei alte Registerbände, die laut Bousquet alle Filme enthalten, die von Pathé hergestellt und vertrieben wurden. Der fortlaufend numerierte Bestand wurde von Bousquet ab 1993 veröffentlicht (Catalogue Pathé des années 1896 à 1914 [Vol. I-IV] und De Pathé Frères à Pathé Cinéma [Vol. I+II]) Obwohl Produktionsnummer und Ausgabemonat von Bousquet rekonstruiert werden konnten, ist der Film in den originalen Registerbänden nicht enthalten. ― [In the 1990s the French film historian Henri Bousquet published his multi-volume “restoration”-work of the whole Pathé output Catalogue Pathé des années 1896 à 1914 [Vol. I-IV] and De Pathé Frères à Pathé cinéma [Vol. I+II]. For his work he relied on two contemporary “Registres Pathé” which he claimed to contain “all the films produced, edited or distributed by Pathé Frères between 1907 and 1926” (Foreword Vol.3). Although Bousquet was able to establish the Production number and -month, the film is not included in the original "Registres Pathé".
