————————————————————————————————————
Not content with his achievements before the cameras and on the stage, Max Linder has turned playwright, and in collaboration with another Max - Max Aghion - has written a revue for that quaint old, but enterprising, music-hall, the Gaité Rochechouart. In the circumstances, one is scarcely surprised to find that the show is a huge advertisement for the cinema, and the ubiquitous Max in particular. Once again moving pictures and a stage spectacle have been coupled together with complete success. The first act of the revue is a very clever mixture of stage and screen scenes. The episode commences in a train; there is a wife returning to her husband, and an amorous traveller. The rest may be imagined without much difficulty. The pictures show a most exciting chase through the principal streets of Paris, and, of course, the trio arrive at the Gaité Rochechouart, whereupon the screen rises, and the artistes come rushing pell mell into the hall. The fugitives assume the respective roles of Compere and Commere, and the revue proper begins. Parisian Notes. By John Cher. (The Bioscope,16.4.1914)
― [Note: At one point during the revue the ladies Fabris and Maphalda are facing each other in a fencing match. Both appeared with the same routine in the film "Max joue le drame" [1914]. That duel is said to be based on a factual event (L'Intransigeant, March 17th 1914). Two rival actresses Mlle. Catherine des Urlis and Mlle. La Marotte-Beaupré are said to have been enraged over a role and one night in the winter of 1669 after a shared performance they tried to resolve their argument with the sword.
